Navigating Reason

In the days that followed the Grenfell Tower fire on June 14th 2017, the whole area seemed caught in a kind of somnambulism. It was as if a sickness had descended and cloaked the buildings, creeping along the streets. People moved in a sleepy vacant manner; neighbours and friends would greet each other with eyes unfocused and bodies slack, as if still in a dream they’d had, and couldn’t quite believe was true.

This film shows footage created using Google Earth, to explore the edges of the programme’s capacity to navigate, delineate and map. What starts as a charting of a location: buildings; streets; the Tower and familiar landmarks, slowly becomes strange and unsettling. Buildings lose their form, the map breaks down and the world turns upside down.
