‘Hands:Type’ Typology 2022
The typological array fascinates me and I have often used it in my work. For this commissioned work I photoghrapohed the hands of the Morley College Ceramic Dept tutors, who teach ceramics in its many forms. To present a grid of images which depict the ‘same but different’ suggests playfulness to the viewer; our eye notices similarity and difference, uniqueness and averageness, the sum of the parts and the whole, all in one tableau. We discern detail in the juxtaposition of one image against another and pick up on patterns which may lead us to move in closer, and ask questions. It was great to photograph these artists hands and the tools of their trade, each of these people’s hands are uniquely different, yet each are sublimely effective; they are their most important tool; allowing them to transform clay into amazing creations. I am delighted that Morley Gallery chose to acquire the work for the Morley Gallery Permanent Collection
The Hands:
Naomi Bailey / Anna Barlow / Stephanie Buttle / Carina Ciscato / James Evans / Duncan Hooson / Alex Huber / Sara Robertson-Jonas / Helen Johannessen / Niamh Phillips / Viktoria Redman / Anna Silverton / Ben Swift / Joanna Veevers / Annette Welch / Fay De Winter
